More than a Venue
We fundamentally believe that the combined power of time and space to forge meaningful and lasting bonds between people, projects, and places is a recipe for revolution.
Bertha Retreat is 45 minutes outside of Cape Town on Boschendal wine farm. At the Retreat, Bertha Foundation grantees, NGOs, partner organizations, the surrounding communities, and other users can meet to connect, work, strategize, and reflect.
Bertha Retreat is designed to bring people together, and this is where the magic happens. Every aspect of the space is intentionally built and curated to support movements and ideas that drive change. By providing a setting where people can come together, reflect, and plan, the retreat becomes more than a place; it becomes a space for imagining and growing the magic of coming together.

Rooted in the Dwarsriver Valley
We are honoured to be part of the communities of Pniel, Kylemore, Meerlust and Lanquedoc. Many of our spaces are named in recognition of the families who shaped this land and continue to inspire our work.
Reciprocity Stay
Bertha Retreat recently welcomed the Congolese Civil Society Organisation for a reciprocity stay, creating space for mutual learning, exchange, and solidarity. Reciprocity stays are rooted in the belief that everyone has knowledge, lived experience, and skills to share. Rather than simply offering a place to stay, Bertha Retreat creates opportunities for guests to connect meaningfully with local communities in ways that are beneficial to everyone involved.
During their stay, the organisation spent time with migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees living in the Dwarsrivier Valley, sharing practical information about South African laws and the rights and responsibilities of non-South African nationals. These sessions equipped participants with valuable knowledge to better navigate legal processes while creating space for dialogue, connection, and community support.
